ExplorAsian Launches!

Dear Friends,

The NECYSC Senior Program was created in 2002 to provide high school students with a fun and enriching environment to discuss issues faced by Chinese Americans and learn about Chinese culture and heritage. This past year, the program has been renamed NECYSC ExplorAsian and now includes an emphasis to cultivate identity, community, and leadership skills among Chinese American youth.

The driving forces behind our program are important – Asian Americans represent one of the fastest growing racial groups; but in classrooms across the country, Asian American history and culture are rarely taught. Further, although Asian Americans constitute an ethnic group with the highest college graduation rate, they are noticeably underrepresented at the ranks of professional leadership. The week-long ExplorAsian senior program aims to affect these issues by empowering participants with the awareness of what it is to be Chinese American; and providing the frameworks and tools to help our youth excel as Asian Americans in the broader community.

This year, we hope to launch some exciting initiatives, including a community exhibition, full scholarships, and professionally led workshops held by Asian American educators. We hope to build on our previous years’ work and fulfill our ambitious agenda for 2009!
